Gift

Salvation is a gift from God.  She cannot boast in earning such a gift. She knows her works.  She knows her straying thoughts and wandering heart.
So does He.
And He loves her anyway. Unconditionally.
She could not comprehend this love, for she never felt it before.  Until…
He gave her another gift.
The moment she saw her daughter,
The moment her eyes beheld her dark, wet hair and chubby cheeks,
The moment she touched perfection,
She knew love; a deeper love than ever felt before.
Love with no boundaries,
Love without rejection,
Love which never ceases.
Unconditional love.
She knew there was a God, and she sought Him.
All because of a gift.

My beautiful girl today.

Mission Organize

I posted a couple weeks ago about the 31 Days to Cheaply Organize Your Home.  I feel like I constantly live in disorganization.  When a friend mentioned recently that I spoke nonchalantly about a possible upcoming move, I thought about how many houses I have lived in during my thirty-four years.  Due to a crazy childhood and then marrying a military man, I can recall thirty-two homes.  Is it any wonder I struggle with getting settled in, organizing, and having a household routine?  Certainly, not skills I learned growing up.  Often we moved very quickly, leaving so many things behind.  I wonder if that has not contributed to my urge to just throw everything away, or burn the house down (haha!), and start over when I feel overwhelmed.

With moving often as a military famiy, I've also just pieced together furniture.  Who wants to invest in very nice stuff when it just gets dinged up? The older I get, the more I long for matching furniture, an organized home; a home I can settle into and actually decorate because I'm staying there, not planning yet another move.  I'm so very tired of being a wanderer in this life.  I want to find a resting place....home, sweet home.

I think I've done better over the years, but still have much to learn about managing housekeeping. I admit it.  Things get cluttery.  So, I'm determined not just in this 31 days, but to really learn how to organize a home, organize my life more.  I haven't followed these 31 days in all things and areas, but am progressing.  I tackled a big, daunting project for me.

Remember this....

We had a nasty water leak, which included tearing out walls and subflooring.  Then as we needed another bedroom, my husband thought this was a great place to put a little one for our oldest son.  But, it's just a space walled in, and the bathroom still has only a sink and toilet, no tub, with plywood up for walls until we finish this job.  It's been months, but my husband retires from active duty in May, and until he has another job lined up, investing in finishing these projects isn't happening.  I don't mind the construction so much, just the chaos it created.  Things were thrown into boxes and piles and shoved aside.  Just thinking about tackling all this was overwhelming.  Yikes!

But, I finally did....

Tada!!!  My new sewing area. I had some leftover white paint in the garage.  The paneling will eventually be pulled down, but it was looking so dingy.  I hated the yellow, it needed cleaned up, and the walls had been colored on by three different kids, including one of my own.  So, with the help of my daughter, we pulled everything out and I slapped a couple quick coats of white on the walls. At least, I feel like it is clean and fresh, around all the construction stuff.

I had Russ's grandma's hutch in the back corner, but took the top off.  It will work as an ironing space, so I don't have to set up my ironing board when I sew, which is always taking up more room and I'm nervous when the little boys are around me, that they will bump it and an iron will fall on them.  Problem solved.  Yay! The table is large enough to have my rotary cutting mat, my sewing machine, and then have my ironing area set up. A functional set up.  Yay again!

I tried to pretty up my mess some.  I had this old shelf up in storage.  Russ hung it for me and I glued some lace on the edges.  The basket in the top right, made by my mom, holds the rest of my civil war blocks.  Oh, as you see I hung flannel on the wall for a design wall.  It's not very big, and obviously not meant for my large civil war blocks.  I just hung them to motivate me right now and I think they are pretty!  I am determined to finish this quilt.  I do love it!

I also had this old wire shelf in storage.  Since I lost some shelf space removing the top of the hutch, adding these couple of shelves helped so much. I want to hang a pocket organizer on the wall below it.  I have one that I made for my husband to hang on his bed when he deployed to Afghanistan.  It has appliques of the kids handprints.  I just have to get a way to hang it.

A close up of my ironing station.  Russ made the board for me. It has a couple layers of insul-brite and then he stapled the fabric I gave him to it.  I can't tell you how much I love using this instead of the ironing board.  I used it recently while working on my mini-quilts and it's perfect for quilt blocks!  Perfect!  I'd like to make an iron cover for the iron.

Here is a quick glance at the rest of the room.  I painted the paneling and plywood white as well here.  It cleaned it up and isn't such an eyesore.  I'm not going for great decor here, just trying to have things look a bit cleaner and neater and not so depressing to me.  Maybe I'll put up a couple things on the wall.  Oh, and the top to the hutch isn't staying there.  Just too heavy for my daughter and I to carry up the stairs, so will have Russ help me when he has time.

I took all my other bookshelves up to our storage room above our carport.  That room was a disaster and we recently organized it.  Hauled off a couple truck loads of stuff to thrift and throw out.  Anyhow, most of my books, with homeschooling I accumulate a lot, are up in storage now.  I have narrowed it down to these shelves inside and if we need another book, we can run up and get it.  Oh, so nice!  Makes me happy!

I feel a great sense of relief and a burden lifted! Whew....

Dinosaur Volcano Cake

I don't know that you can call this a tutorial, but more of a basic here is what I did to create my son's dinosaur birthday cake.  Photos along the way.  Thought I'd share if anyone was interested in recreating a similar cake. If so, please send me a photo.  I'd love to see it!

I'm no cake decorator, as you'll see in the following photos. I do enjoy making birthday cakes for my kids though! I think this just proves that about any mom can pull off a fun cake.  My kids didn't care about any of it's imperfections!  Just fun and tasty!

Nate is holding my recipe...or rather the recipe I use for chocolate cake and icing.  You can find it on the back of a Hershey's Cocoa container.  It's called "Pefectly Chocolate" and it is perfectly delicious.  My family's favorite chocolate cake and I can't count the number of times I've made it.  Really, homemade cake is pretty simple and tastes so much better than box mixes!!  Yum!

Have you watched Cake Boss? Love that show.  Love The Next Great Baker!! I could never be on it, but I've picked up some tricks.  Like carving out of rice krispie treats.  So, I made a double-batch and dumped the pile on a cookie sheet sprayed with cooking spray.  As they were partially cooled, I put a little butter on my hands to prevent sticking and shaped them.  Then as they set more, I was able to refine the shape.  This was much easier than I anticipated.

Oh, the dinosaur.  Found in the dollar bin at Wal-mart.  It was too big to fit the whole dino in the mountain, so my husband cut the poor fellow in half. Nate wanted a dinosaur looking like he was coming out of a cave, so this was my best effort.

So here is the chocolate cake, baked in a 9 x 13 pan.  Then I iced it with the "Perfectly Chocolate" frosting and  once completely cooled, I sat my mountain and volcano on top of my cake.  I did test the sizing of my mountain and volcano, but sitting them on the un-iced cake while I was shaping them.  That gave me the best view of how it would look.

Now, for the water.  I also made some buttercream icing, recipe from Wilton.  You can add some Wilton blue gel to it, but I had some dark blue icing that comes in the tubes in the cake section at the grocery store.  I added a bit of that to the buttercream and got the lighter blue.  Then made a river.  Easy!

The same tubes of icing in the grocer's cake section were used for my lava.  I bought red and yellow.  Just mixed to get the look on the cake.  My husband made fun of my lava making skills.  You can too! I won't mind. But, it didn't take lava perfection to impress a five-year old.  He loved the volcano!! ;-)

I did add some green Wilton gel to some buttercream to make the grass.  Nate is using a disposable icing bag and I did purchase Wilton tip 233, the grass tip.  Spent $1.84 on it.

Here Nate is adding some smaller dinosaurs. We finished adding grass.  We used cocoa puffs for rocks and I tried to do a nice edging around the cake.

Added the candle to the volcano of course! Where else would you put fire and added his name?  My handwriting skills need some work.  In real life and on cakes. haha!  There you have it, one delicious, fun dinosaur birthday cake that any mom can make.

I think the best part, other than eating rice krispie mountain with chocolate frosting, was making the cake with Nathan.  He loves to help in the kitchen and really enjoyed helping with his cake.  I appreciate these moments so much!!  He's growing fast!!  When my first baby turned five I cried.  The third time around, I cried too.  The first time, I told my husband that the baby days were over and now I was preparing her to leave home someday.  At 13 1/2 now, that reality is closer than I'd like!  My practical husband told me I was preparing her to leave home from the moment she was born.  Okay, whatever! haha!  But, this time the tears were different.  Some were happy because I am just so in love with this little boy!  I think this age is my favorite time with him.  He is so creative and his mind fascinates me.  Some of the tears were from a rejoicing heart.  I can't tell you how incredibly blessed I am to be allowed to be mom to four amazing children.  I can hardly believe God has enriched my life so beautifully, so perfectly!!!

New Beginnings Mini Quilt Received!

As I posted last week, I participated in Quilting Gallery's New Beginnings Mini Quilt Swap.  I had so much fun making my mini and am thrilled that my partner likes it so much. She doesn't have a blog, so can't share much about her, but something pretty I made is sitting on a table in Connecticut.  How fun is that?

But, I have to say this swap gets even better....by far the best swap I have participated in...because I got a bit spoiled myself.  Look at this beautiful mini quilt I received.....

This mini was designed by Amy from Butterfly Angels and she named it "Butterfly Kisses." She will be making this pattern available as a free pdf, so if you love it as much as I do, keep an eye on her blog.

Check out the gorgeous hand quilting!! I am simply in love with it!

Pieced backing!

Currently in use on my dining room table.

A couple extra goodies, coasters, that she included.
What a treat!
Amy, thank you so much for taking time to make such a beautiful quilt for me. I love everything about it, pattern, fabrics, and quilting. Absolutely thrilled with it!!

Happy 5th Birthday Nate!!

By 8 a.m. the candle had been lit, birthday song sung, presents opened, and cake eaten.  Gotta get in the birthday festivities before Dad left for work.  Later today, we'll enjoy the great outdoors with some bike riding, water guns and the ever famous bubbles.  :-)  Birthdays are fun!!

Cake and presents.  I'll post some more photos of how we did the dinosaur cake in a couple days.  Nate loved this cake and we had so much fun making it!

Is that for me?

Happy 5th Birthday!
I love this boy so much. He truly is one amazing kid, who lights up everyday of my life. God blessed me when He allowed me to be Nathan's mom!!

He received some water guns, Lego Ninjago pjs, a Lego Ninjago set from sissy, a little carved wooden gun from Matthew, and of course his Hot Wheels bike!

Breakfast...hey, you only turn 5 once!! haha!

Can't wait to take it outside later, but it works fine in the kitchen too!

Boy's Dinosaur Apron + A Giveaway!!

My son loves to help me cook! He is a constant companion and many times has mentioned his need for an apron. He always tells me I'm pretty in mine. Sweet boy!! Tomorrow is his 5th birthday and today we need to make his cake.  I decided to whip together a quick apron for him and remembered some fabulous dinosaur fabric I had in my stash.  Perfect match since we are having a dino birthday.  I knew the style of apron I was looking for and went to my favorite online location....Pinterest!  I found the perfect tutorial and pinned it.

Seriously, this tutorial is exactly what it says...simple.  What a fast, easy apron!!

Mini Quilt Swap -- Quilting Gallery

I am participating in a mini quilt swap at Quilting Gallery.  Not too long ago, I pinned this mini on Pinterest:

If anyone can tell me how to center a photo embedded from Pinterest and then also center the caption below it, I'd appreciate it much.  Okay, now back to the subject.  :-)  I loved this little quilt and when I saw the swap, it was the perfect opportunity to make one.  It didn't meet the size requirements for the swap, so I added a border with pin wheel blocks in the corners.  Here is the one I made for my swap partner:

Measures 17" x 21"

And here is the one I've made for me.  I have not quilted mine yet.

I also followed a tutorial to make a label for my quilt.  Found here on Pinterest:

Mine:

I really enjoyed making this mini.  It's so fun and cheery! But, it did challenge more than I anticipated.  Piecing such small blocks, finished at 3 1/2" inches, made me feel like a beginner.  I welcomed the practice though and enjoyed the time spent.  Can hardly wait to finish mine now!!
